| Bobby Hackett became a professional musician in his early teens after learning to play a number of instruments at school. First of all his played the violin and guitar but by 1934 he was concentrating on the cornet. He moved to New York in 1936 where he played in the bands of Meyer Davis and the Lanin Brothers. Moving more towards the jazz scene in 1937, he worked with Joe Marsala and Red McKenzie and was one of the guest musicians at Benny Goodman's Carnegie Hall concerts in 1938. By the end of the 1930's, Bobby Hackett was working on the radio in New York and on films in Hollywood, recording and leading his own bands. In 1942 he joined Glenn Millar playing the guitar although he did play the cornet on the hit record 'String of Pearls'. Afterwards he spent more time with the Marsala band and the Casa Loma Orchestra and in staff work for NBC. Bobby Hackett played on several jazz record and concert dates including the Town Hall concert in New York that established the Louis Armstrong All Stars. |
