| Buck Clayton was an accomplished trumpeter by his late teens. He worked locally in Kansas and California. He returned to the west coast playing in several Los Angeles
bands, including that of Charlie Echols. Buck Clayton formed his own group, which he took to China for two years. On his return to California, his reputation had preceded him and in 1936 was invited to join Count Basie. Buck Clayton stayed with Basie until 1943 when he was called up for military service. The time with Basie had guaranteed him a successful career. |
