| Buddy Tate was one of the most outstanding tenor saxophonists of his time. Between 1927 and 1939 he played in a succession of territory bands. Starting out as an alto saxophonist, Buddy Tate quickly developed into a tenor player and added distinction to the bands of Troy Floyd, Terrence Holder, Andy Kirk and Nat Towles. He said that the band of Nat Towles was the best one he had ever worked in. Buddy Tate joined the Count Basie band in 1939 having worked with him five years previously. He stayed with Basie until the end of the 1940's and then went on to play with Lucky Millinder Oran 'Hot Lips' Page and others. In 1953, Buddy Tate took his own band into residency at the Celebrity Club in Harlem, staying there until the mid 1970's. While in residency he took time out to tour and record with artists including Jimmy Rushing and Buck Clayton. In 1975, after briefly co leading a band with Paul Quinichette, Tate decided to work on a solo career. He did occasionally team up with fellow artists such as Illinois Jacquet, Al Grey, Scott Hamilton and Bobby Rosegarden. |
