 Chick Webb

Name: Chick Webb

Nee: William Henry Webb
Born: 10 Feb 1909
Died: 16 Jun 1939
Origin: Baltimore, Maryland, United States
Instruments: Drums
Chick Webb suffered from tuberculosis as a child, this resulted in stunting his growth and badly deforming his spine. He supported himself as a newspaper boy and saved up money to buy drums, and first played professionally at the age of eleven. His determination to be a drummer overcame his physical disabilities. While still in his teens, Chick Webb travelled to New York to form his own band. He gained a residency at the Savoy Ballroom in 1931 and quickly became their favourite act. By this time he had developed a hunchback and therefore had to use a specially modified drum kit. He hired good musicians including Johnny Hodges, Benny Carter, Jimmy Harrison, Mario Bauza, Wayman Carver, Taft Jordan, Louis Jordan and Bobby Stark.
