| Chris Barber studied trombone and bass at the Guildhall School of Music in the 1940's. He chose the trombone as his major instrument. He formed his first band in the late 1940's as a co-operative which was unusual. Monty Sunshine, Ron Bowden and Lonnie Donegan were also in the band and by the early 1950's had a considerable following. They invited Ken Colyer to join the band and although the decision was right musically it was a disaster personnel wise as the band members clashed repeatedly. Ken Colyer left and was replaced with Pat Halcox. Another new member was singer Ottillie Patteron, Chris Barber's girlfreind and by 1959 his wife. Chris Barber tried his hand at skiffle and in the mid 1950's formed his own Skiffle Group featuring Ron Bowden (drums), Dickie Bishop (vocals), and the powerful but nasal vocalist/guitarist Johnny Duncan.
Chris Barber played upright bass during this time, an instrument on which he is equally adept. |
