Gary Burton studied at Berklee College Of Music for two years. Here he met and befriended Mike Gibbs which was to prove an important musical association. He joined George Shearing's group in 1963 moving on to spend two years with Stan Getz. In the late 1960's he formed his own band playing jazz rock. During the 1970's, Burton led a succession of bands with musicians including Larry Coryell, Steve Swallow, Roy Haynes, Pat Metheny and Eberhard Weber.
