Gary Burton taught himself to play the piano but did study music formally before switching to the vibraphone. He recorded with Hank Garland, a country guitarist, but then moved on to jazz. Gary Burton studied at Berklee College Of Music for two years. Here he met and befriended Mike Gibbs which was to prove an important musical association. He joined George Shearing's group in 1963 moving on to spend two years with Stan Getz. In the late 1960's he formed his own band playing jazz rock. During the 1970's, Burton led a succession of bands with musicians including Larry Coryell, Steve Swallow, Roy Haynes, Pat Metheny and Eberhard Weber. During this time he also recorded with Stephane Grappelli, Carla Bley, Keith Jarrett, Chick Corea, Michael Brecker, Peter Erskine and others.
