| Jan Garbarek, inspired by hearing John Coltrane on the radio, taught himself to play tenor saxophone. By 1962 he had won an amateur competition resulting in professional work. He soon formed a band with Jon Christensen, Terje Rypdal and Arild Andersen. Playing a version of Coltrane's 'Naima' at a European Broadcasting Union festival in 1968 brought him much acclaim worldwide. By the mid 1970's, Jan Garbareck was working in Jarrett's Belonging band with Christensen and Danielsson. By the 1980's he had his own band comprising of Eberhard Weber, Bill Frisell and John Abercrombie among others. Jan Garbarek has also worked with Don Cherry, Chick Corea, David Torn and George Russell. He also showed an increasing interest in ethnic and folk music leading him to record with Ravi Shankar on the 1984 Song For Everyone. |
