Johnny Hartman started singing while still at school and then went on to study formally at college. Following the end of World War II, he became a professional and in 1947 attracted attention when he sang with Earl Hines followed two years later with Erroll Garner. His rich deep baritone voice lent itself to a range of genre allowing him to sing country music along popular songs of the day. This meant that he was able to work on television. With jazz music he inclined towards modernism and resulted in him recording with Dizzy Gillespie, John Coltrane and Sir Roland Hanna.
