Kenny On the Ball: A Definitive Tribute To Wembley

Kenny Ball & His Jazzmen with The Treorchy Male Choir

 Kenny Ball

Name: Kenny Ball

Nee: Kenneth Daniel Ball
Born: 22 May 1930
Origin: Ilford, Essex, England
Instruments: Trumpet
Kenny Ball was the most successful survivor of the 1960's 'trad boom'. Early on in his career he played the harmonica and bugle before switching to the trumpet. He played for the BBC radio broadcast along side Charlie Galbraith and also deputised for Freddy Randall, Britain's leading dixieland trumpet player. In 1954, Kenny Ball joined with clarinettist Sid Phillips and four years later formed his own group, 'The Jazzmen', having played with musicians such as Eric Delaney, George Chisholm, Terry Lightfoot and Al Fairweather. The Jazzmen didn't record until 1954 but his first hit wasn't until 1961 when he recorded Cole Porter's 'Samantha'. He followed this hit when he recorded 'Midnight in Moscow' which sold a million copies and reached number two in the UK and US charts. In the 1960's he recorded hits such as 'March Of The Siamese Children' from The King And I, 'The Green Leaves Of Summer', and 'Sukiyaki'.
