| Sarah Vaughan took piano lessons for ten years and also sang in the church choir. By the age of twelve she was playing the organ in the church. Her parents were not musical at all. Her father was a carpenter and her mother did laundry. In 1942 Vaughan won an amateur contest at Harlem's Apollo theatre and her musical career took off. Billy Eckstein heard her sing and invited her to join his own band a year later.
Singing with the Eckstein band she met Charlie Parker and Dizzy Gillespie. This time gave her the fundamental background of the new music that was to shape her career. When she left Eckstein she sand with John Kiry's band for a short while before deciding to perform under her own name. Sarah Vaughan met trumpeter George Treadwell at the Cafe Society and they married in 1947. He recognised his wife's talent and became her manager. She started by recording with Miles Davis in 1950 followed by Clifford Brown, Cannonball Adderley and members of the Count Basie band. These recodings remain some of her most satisfying work. |
