| Shorty Rogers played trumpet with bands of Will Bradley after first studying in New York. Here he met Shelly Manne and Red Norvo. In 1945, after serving in the military, Shorty Rogers joined Wood Herman for a while but also wrote a number of bop flavoured big band charts. After leaving Herman, he played and arranged for Stan Kenton also composing for musicians such as Art Pepper and Maynard Ferguson. Working in the California area in the 1950's he was still writing hard swinging charts for Kenton. He also worked in films, appearing on the soundtrack of 'The Man With The Golden Arm' (1955).Shorty Rogers also recorded with his own big band, borrowing a lot of the musicians from the Kenton band, but he mainly led a succession of important small groups. |
