Sonny Rollins started playing the piano at the age of nine even though his elder brother played the violin. He was destined though to play the saxophone and in 1944 he was playing the alto saxophone in high school. When he left school in 1947 he started gigging around New York on the tenor. Coleman Hawkins was his inspiartion. His first recording was with Babs Gonzales in 1948 for Capitol Records and not long after he was playing with Bud Powell, Fats Navarro and J.J. Johnson. By 1953 he had recorded with Art Blakey, Tadd Dameron, Miles Davies and Thelonious Monk.
