Stephane Grappelli first learned to play keyboard instruments before taking up the violin. During the mid 1920's he played in dance bands in Paris. It was during this time that he moved more and more to the jazz scene. He met Django Reinhardt in the mid 1930's and they formed The Quintette Du Hot Club De France. Up until that time, Stephane Grapelli had been playing both the piano and the violin but decided to concentrate on the violin. Recordings and performances brought them to the attention of the jazz world. Stephane Grapelli was still a novice and his success was mainly due to Django Reinhardt. He settled in London just before World War II playing with George Shearing and after the war he played briefly again with Django Reinhardt. During the 1940's and 1950's his audiences began to diminish all over Europe.
