| The Modern Jazz Quartet was formed in 1951 with Milt Jackson (Vibraphone), John Lewis (Piano), Ray Brown (Bass) and Kenny Clark (Drums). They were originally called the Milt Jackson Quartet. Ray Brown left and was replaced by Percy Heath and the Milt Jackson Quartet was renamed The Modern Jazz Quartet a year later. Originally they formed as a recording group only but then they started to take on concerts. By 1955 Kenny Clarke had dropped out and he was replaced by Connie Kay. |
