| Zoot Sims didn't take up the tenor saxophone until 1941 when he went to work with the singer Kenny Baker. Before this he played the clarinet. He played with Bobby Sherwood from 1942-1943, Sonny Durham in 1943 and the Benny Goodman big band in 1944. In 1944 he made his recording debut with Joe Bushkin's small group. 1944 - 1946 was spent in the army, but on discharge he rejoined Benny Goodman to play next to his brother, Ray. By 1947 he was playing with Woody Herman and became one of the famous 'Four Brothers' along with Stan Getz, Herbie Steward and Serge Chaloff. He left Goodman and started touring with Artie Shaw, firstly from 1949-1950 and then at regular intervals in 1950, 1958, 1972 and 1976. Through these years he also toured with Stan Kenton and Gerry Mulligan. |
