Customer Reviews

This album is the perfect accompaniment to a summer evening! Rating: 5.0

This album was given to me as a birthday present and it is now definitely my favourite CD ever! I hadn't heard any of his music before, and now I have become an avid fan of Wynton Marsalis. His music is so different from the mainstream kind of jazz that gets played on the radio. The first track, Angel Eyes, lulls you at first with the smooth haunting tones that makes Marsalis so different from other trumpeters such as Louis Armstrong. The second track, Bitter Dose, has an amazing introduction with a wonderfully pulsing bass rhythm. The album, despite only having 9 tracks, is incredibly varied and mixes eerie tones with upbeat ensemble tracks. The fact that the album is live helps the atmosphere a lot. After every musician has had his solo opportunity, the audience, who you will inevitably wish that you were part of, start to clap and cheer. It brings the music more alive. If you close your eyes while listening to this, you are transported to a dimly lit, smoky jazz club, with Marsalis on trumpet, and that feeling is something I haven't been able to find on another CD anywhere. This album is the perfect accompaniment to the first glass of wine of an evening, or for summer lounging in the garden.
