This live album captures Frank Sinatra at the peak of his Rat Pack years. Recorded in 1966 at the Sands hotel in Las Vegas, crammed full of Sinatra standards and littered with musical legends, this album has become the de facto standard for arranging big band brass. Frank is backed by the Count Basie Orchestra, which at the time was the best big band in the world. The orchestra is arranged and conducted by the youthful but already accomplished Quincy Jones. From the moment drummer Sonny Payne strikes up the band, the excitement never stops. The sheer power of the playing, from sight-read parts, puts many rock bands to shame. A master wrote each note and each song is crafted to perfection. This CD also captures Sinatra's stage banter. --F.B. Hawkes |

A Must for your Sinatra Collection |
Rating: 5.0 |
Fantastic, highly recommended. This is Sinatra at his best with the unbeatable backing of the Count Basie Orchestra. Sinatra's timing is impeccable and his voice is wonderful. The Basie Orchestra is faultless. Sit quietly and listen - with the compere's introduction, the audience applause and Sinatra's monologues, you are transported to the Sands for the evening. Enjoy. |

Hard to believe it's live |
Rating: 5.0 |
Several of the songs on this incredible live recording are so perfected that it's hard to believe they were recorded "live" rather than at a studio, but that is why Sinatra is as legendary an artist to America as Saphos was to the ancient world. The rendition of "Fly Me to the Moon" is utterly indestinguishable from a prerecording, so perfectly is it "nailed down" as are other hits such as "Come Fly with Me" and "Shadow of Your Smile". As far as I can tell, this CD has the finest rendition of "Luck Be A Lady" ever recorded and, for that matter, may ever be recorded. |

Sinatra at his best |
Rating: 5.0 |
Sinatra had two ways of singing. Studio and concert. His studio recordings are second to none, but to really hear him "swing" you need a concert performance. Out of all of the concerts I have heard, the Sands it Sinatra at his best, and with Count Basey behind him life just couldn't get better. The album kicks off with sinatra being called on stage, he performs hit after hit pausing only briefly for a comedy routine in the middle. If I had to throw away all of my Sinatra bar one, the Sands would be the album I kept. |

Sinatra doing what he did best....... |
Rating: 5.0 |
Singing live! I initially chose this particular Cd version because I stayed at the Sands when I was in Las Vegas. I thought that all the songs of his that we know and love are all the same so whichever CD I chose it wouldn't matter. Wrong! This CD evokes all the atmosphere of a smokey jazz club and the smoothness of Sinatra. He is evidently enjoying himself singing with the classy Bassie orchestration adn the monologues show you his humorous side. This is the second time I have bought this CD as I have given the first ones to friends from Europe who loved it so much they took it home with them! If there is one Frank Sinatra CD you are intending to buy give this one a chance - you won't regret it. I'll bet you'll be singing along and dancing round your living room in no time! |

Stonking Album |
Rating: 5.0 |
This another great Sinatra album. Jazz FM started playing the opening track ages ago and then in typical radio fashion didn't bother with the rest of the album the lazy sods. Even so it was enough to persuade me to buy it. There's a couple of things I'd have swapped. I'd have dumped the monologues and Get Me to The Church but that's being picky. There's also a curious note in Don't Worry Bout Me which he seems to want to slide into and doesn't work but as other reviewers have pointed out it is a fantastic performance. The band is marvellous as you would expect. You won't be disappointed. If that wierd note gets on your nerves, then buy Where Are You? It has the studio version as a bonus track and it's worth the money for that alone. |
