In The Girl in the Other Room, singer and pianist Diana Krall changes direction by interpreting modern standards by Tom Waits, Mose Allison and Joni Mitchell, as well as compositions by her and her new husband, Elvis Costello. Krall's jazz piano credentials come through loud and clear on her Count Basie-styled version of Bonnie Raitt's "Love Me Like a Man", but it's the collaborations with her spouse that reveal untapped emotional nuances in her velvet voice; many are reminiscent of Bill Evans's moody, impressionistic pieces. The title track, as well as "Narrow Daylight", "Abandoned Masquerade", and "I'm Coming Through" deals with love and loss. "Departure Bay", a picturesque ode to her hometown of Nanaimo, BC, proves that this is the start of something big, and that two heads--and hearts--are better than one. --Eugene Holley, Jr, Amazon.com |

an ill conceived affair |
Rating: 2.0 |
I cannot tell you how much it pains me to write a review that has me openly disliking the latest album of one of my favourite jazz singers, the multi talented Diana Krall. Her latest attempt 'The girl in the other room', I feel is ill conceived and worst of all, every track, except, perhaps, 'I'll never be the same',is monotone and dreary. I look forward to her next album, when, perhaps, she will be back on track and sparking on all fours. I feel the musical coupling with Elvis Costello just does not work. Individually their talents are fine, together, they are a definite no no. |

At last Diana Krall's talent shines through on record |
Rating: 5.0 |
I always thought that Diana Krall was nice to listen to, but with nothingextra that made me buy any records of her. That was until I saw and heardher Live in Paris DVD, where the Canadian singer stepped out from theformer slick and almost icy approach and delivered that extra. Suddenlyyou could feel the warmth in her voice, her ultra sensual charisma camethrough with full force - I was hooked. Still feel though that her albumsare too polished for my taste, I stick with the fantastic live DVD. Now Mrs Krall has made a studio album that connects to the feeling on theLive DVD. The musical setting is much more intimate than on her previousalbums. Basically you have one tight band, where the two most impressivemusicians to my ears are Anthony Wilson on guitar and Christian McBride onbass. Diana Krall herself sings like a goddess and plays a very goodpiano. The songs are a mix of jazz, blues and pop, with a more rootsyfeeling than her usual repertoire. There are also a mixture of covers andoriginal songs. The originals are all written by Diana Krall and ElvisCostello, though Costello has only contributed to the music on themajestic title track, otherwise he has stuck to the words. There is anatural flow to the song sequence on the album and the originals stand upvery good to the covers. There are in my opinion no weak songs on the album, and my favourites(today) are the title track (Krall/Costello) and Temptation (TomWaits). Audiowise the album is very good recorded and produced. Highly recommendable!! |

Diana Krall in my room |
Rating: 4.0 |
The Girl in the Other Room is a marvellous new album from my favourite artist of the 21st century (so far). All her other other albums show her brilliant talent at original arrangements of classics; this album show originality not just of arrangement but of composition, style, and, most important, something new and dynamic in the now overworked jazz classic works. A wonderful addition for any Diana Krall lover. You might need time to get used to some of the new tracks as there are some great new ideas and differences from her usual style, but the music grows on you very quickly. Not to be missed. |

Diana Krall Goes Mainstream |
Rating: 1.0 |
With the absolutely stunning work Diana did on her Paris Live album and certainly in "The Look of Love" production, one would expect Ms. Krall to grace us with yet another aural masterpiece. Not so this time. With advice of her new husband Elvis Costello, she sings newly written "original" songs. Sparce instrumentally and emotionally detached, she whines and laments about personal loss. Whilst it is an experience we all have had, when a singer is beautiful, talented, travels the world and has priviledge, it is hard for me to "feel her pain"... especially when she sings these dirges in a pedestrian and monotone fashion. This is NOT the Diana Krall we have come to know and love. I am hopeful she will give us more of the songs and grand orchestration we have come to know and crave. She has ALWAYS been unique and innovative by her voice alone. These new tunes make her sound like Joni Mitchell, Norah Jones, Stevie Nicks, Rickie Lee Jones and dozens of others who perform that style far better. |

Simply great! |
Rating: 5.0 |
Wow Ms Diana Krall has done it again , a great album with excelent sound and this time a little bit more varied , IMO , but still a cool , smooth album by this wonderfull artist/singer. I think she grew up higher in this album from the last one (The Look of Love), and we could say better everytime. I will hear and see her live in September and I just can't wait! |
