Customer Reviews

excellent reissue Rating: 5.0

The Carnegie Hall concert is a landmark in jazz history. The charged atmosphere is palpable and the playing is energized throughout. It's wonderful to finally have the concert available with a decent remastering effort. The Sony reissue sounded as though it had been recorded next to a crackling bonfire. Dave Bennett has cleaned up the recordings and brought some life into them.

The small groups sides from Columbia and Capitol are a lot of fun to listn to and they are a bonus. And the fidelity is terrific.

A great reissue from Avid. Looking forward to more from their Gold remasters series.

Good bargain version Rating: 4.0

Everyone should have a copy of the 1938 Carnegie Hall concert in their collection.

The original acetate discs were transferred to LP in 1950, and this Avid set contains a transfer from an LP set. The sound has been brightened up considerably by the engineer, Dave Bennett.

The set also includes an hour and a half of other tracks, from 1944-7, again in bright clear sound. So the total amount of music makes this set a bargain which would be a good introduction to Goodman for anyone new to him.

Sony released a CD transfer of the LP set in the early days of CD, but their current offering is a new transfer from the original acetate discs. This gives a complete recording of the concert, with all applause and announcements, and about ten minutes of music which is not on the Avid set. However, there are no other tracks in the set, so you get much less music altogether, at a higher price.

The Sony set has less distortion than the Avid set, but much more noise and crackles. I think the Sony set will suit serious Goodman fans and this Avid set will suit most listeners.
