Customer Reviews

Hits, Rarities and another Studio album on CD! Rating: 5.0

WONDERFUL DAY: This is a rare US-only LP from 1961. Released to coincide with the 2nd Hudson/Day picture 'Lover Come Back', it cleverly builds a collection around the title song and 'Should I Surrender?', both of which were singles from the movie’s soundtrack. It also features rarities like 'Till My Love Comes To Me' (from the obscure vinyls issued for the Sinatra/Day film Young At Heart), as well as elusive singles 'Be Prepared' and 'Julie'.

WITH A SMILE AND A SONG: Recorded between the 7th and 14th of July 1964 this is the debut on CD of one of Doris’s last studio albums and quite a departure from those prior to it. She abandons her much more serious guise as a songstress for this fun, family themed LP with an adorable Children’s chorus. The tunes, all carefully chosen for their obvious universal appeal, inspire and enchant any child at heart whether young or old. With this in mind it was a logical choice for movie-makers at DreamWorks to use her cut of the Sinatra song High Hopes in their magical, animated tale Antz.

Other highlights have to be the remake of Day’s multi-million selling single Qué Será, Será which is alone worth a listen, as well as sing-along renditions of kid’s favourites Nick-Nack-Paddy-Wack, Swinging On A Star, Disney tunes Zip-A-Dee-Doo-Dah (Song of the South) and With a Smile and a Song (Snow White). Doris also manages to return to some classic musical scores by Rodgers & Hammerstein, craftily selecting some very apt tunes like Do Re Mi (The Sound of Music) and Getting to Know You (The King & I).

Sony 2-Fer. Rating: 5.0

Sony Music UK have released a number of Doris Day albums, on their 2-on-1 series, which is now becoming a big collection. Very much so like Collectables Records have been doing in the US (Collectables have also done it for Doris Day, and a whole load of other artists). This one gives us "Wonderful Day" and "With a Smile And a Song".

"Wonderful Day" was first released on LP (US only) in 1961. The album is a collection of recordings that date from 1952 up to 1961. It's really a collection of songs mainly from Doris Day movies (not taken straight from the films, these are studio). This reissue to CD gives us two bonus tracks, not on the original LP release ("That Jane From Maine" and "A Perfect Understanding") and some alternate takes for a few songs aswell. A great album. This covers the first half of the CD.

"With a Smile and a Song" was originally released in 1964 (also recorded same year). This album is one of her last, and it is kind of a more "younger" type of thing, although anyone can like it. These recordings were done with "Jimmy Joyce and His Childrens Chorus", and it includes the remake of the very famous song, which Doris Day recorded earlier in her career (and the original appears on the first half of this disc) "Que Sera, Sera". A very enjoyable album. This concludes the disc.

So I think with two decent albums, together on one CD, this is definately worth getting if you are a Doris Day fan. Many of her other albums can be found on either Sony Music in the UK, or Collectables Records in the US. Most of them available are the two-fers. There are so many Doris Day CD's, that you cant really complain.
