Description

Wilson's small-band records of the 1930s contain some of the most relaxed and unpretentiously enjoyable jazz ever recorded. The most famous of them are those featuring the young Billie Holiday, but other singers often took part and there are dozens of fine instrumental sides, too. This collection contains a selection of numbers recorded in 1936, Wilson's first full year in the national spotlight. He was touring at the time with Benny Goodman's orchestra, which accounts for the fact that the sessions took place in New York, Chicago and Los Angeles. Billie Holiday appears on four tracks, notably the glorious "I Cried For You". The band here consists mainly of Duke Ellington sidemen, with Johnny Hodges playing particularly well. In addition there are two numbers by the 18-year-old Ella Fitzgerald, her voice still fetchingly high and girlish, and two by Goodman's regular vocalist at the time, the poised and beautiful Helen Ward. With moonlighting Ellingtonians, plus members of the current Goodman and Fletcher Henderson bands, taking part, the cream of the early swing era is present on these 16 tracks. --Dave Gelly
