In the late 1930s Teddy Wilson was commissioned to produce a series of small band records, usually with singers, for the juke box trade. The passage of the years has elevated the discs to classic status and this collection is made up of six sessions held in 1937. Of the 22 tracks, 12 have vocals by Billie Holiday, three by Helen Ward and three by Boots Castle. Wilson's careful pre-planning resulted in studio bands with truly all-star personnel. Two of the Billie Holiday dates have Buck Clayton and Lester Young; another has a front line from the Duke Ellington orchestra with Cootie Williams, Johnny Hodges and Harry Carney. The songs were generally the current pop tunes of the day such as "Easy Living", "I'll Get By" and "There's A Lull In My Life", most of which have become essential standards. The date with Boots Castle is of particular interest and gathers together a septet from the Benny Goodman band featuring Goodman himself with Harry James, Vido Musso and Gene Krupa. The skilful re-mastering of old 78s has been done by John R. T. Davies. --Steve Voce |
