From the sound of Peterson's first crisp, confident chords in "That Old Feeling", you can be sure that this is not just one of those musically uninteresting all-star roundups that artists sleepwalk through. The song choices are all classics, Armstrong sings and plays with wonderful humor and feeling, and Peterson demonstrates that he's not just a virtuoso player, but is a subtle and feeling vocal accompanist. In many passages he slyly echoes Armstrong's vocal lines back to us, building them into the next line, the next phrase. Thoughtful musical comments aside, it's the kind of music that, when you play it for friends, they'll think you're really cool and ask where you ever found it. And you'll find yourself singing "Let's Fall in Love" on the train platform for months to come. |
